Riding a bike produces no carbon emissions and no air pollution. It is even good for your health!
Walking or riding a bike, using public transport, and limiting the use of cars contribuite to reducing one's carbon footprint. However, one of the most effective ways is to constrain flying. A single return flight to a nearby destination generates carbon emissions (per person) roughly equivalent to using the car for one year.
Taking a long-haul flight generates more carbon emissions than the average person in dozens of countries around the world produces in a whole year. While our culture emphasizes the benefits of travelling to remote destinations, either for pleasure or for business, aviation is a luxury that brings considerable environmental costs. Those who can afford it should attempt to fly as little as possible.
